Accessibility Awareness Project
Reflection
Artist/Designer Statement
I am an experimental designer, that likes to create change in things for the better. I make things because when I see a problem that is creating more problems, I want to design it or revamp it for the better.
Why does this project exist in the world?
To show people that there are issues in the web design industry where accessibility features are forgotten. It makes people more aware that web design templates are a starter in your website, and you need to be at a level where your website is accessibly compliant. Web design templates are very easy to access but people think that what they get is enough. Its either too simple, too fancy,
How does this project exist in the world?
I have a made a quiz-game where it puts the player up to the test of their knowledge. Similar to are you smarter than a fifth grader, is are you smart enough to prove that you know website accessibility.
What have you learned as you've been building?
I have learned that sometimes what your vision is, it won't be the exact same as your final result. And that is okay. At first, I was brainstorming about the aesthetic of the project; how will the title page look? are the illustrations good? But then I realized the whole point was to make people more aware of website accessibility. All I wanted to do from the start was to show the differences between what you think is good and bad design web accessibility.
It will effect other people because it is important to know that your website is updated to the current trends of the web industry including accessibility features. It is technically a law by the ADA and WCAG that your website must meet a certain guideline to uphold accessibility standards. By making this project, I want people to learn how to make the best of their website a win-win situation, for both abled and disabled people.
What artists, designers, artistic/aesthetic/digital movements inspired this project? What does it expand upon, respond to, or re-situate? Whose work made your work possible?
How does it effect, or will it be effected, by other people?
At first, I thought about my passion for web designing, mostly UX design. I started researching and came across some issues with website accessibility. I then stumbled upon WCAG website, dealing with accessibility standards and guidelines. I decided to contact them for more information. A lady Averie MacDonald reached out to me on LinkedIn wanting to guide me through website accessibility. However, she couldn't represent her brand in this matter or give me much advice, I understood and was thankful she had found me on LinkedIn to assist me further. continued..
